Sleep Apnea Dentistry in Arizona
What is the Cause of Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea deprives the brain and body of necessary oxygen while you sleep. Most frequently caused by a blocked airway, this dangerous sleep condition can be harmful to your health and hamper your quality of life. While sleep apnea is generally diagnosed in a sleep clinic, Dr. Steven Chang, D.D.S. is experienced in sleep apnea dentistry and qualified to provide you with treatment to restore your sleep and prevent the complications that may be caused by this condition.
What are the Two Types of Sleep Apnea?
Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) is one of two types of sleep apnea and the least commonly experienced. It results when the brain does not prompt the muscles that control breathing. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) occurs more frequently and is caused when the tissue in your throat closes, blocking your airway during the night.

Who Gets Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea patients are typically overweight males that are older than 40 years of age. However, there are many other risk factors to consider:
• Family history of sleep apnea
• Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD)
• Deviated septum or allergies
• Large neck size
Treatment with Sleep Apnea Dentistry in Arizona
Treatment for sleep apnea depends upon each patient’s unique situation. In some cases, a patient need only lose weight or stop smoking to alleviate symptoms. If these simple behavioral changes do not work, Dr. Chang may recommend an oral device that holds the mouth in position during sleep or a machine that delivers constant air to the throat, ensuring that it does not close. In the most severe cases, surgery may be necessary. Please see our office locations below.
