What is a Dental Crown?

When you crack a tooth or lose a large filling, a dental crown may be placed to protect the remaining structure of your tooth. Dental crowns are basically caps that are shaped and shaded to look just like your other teeth. A crown is then fitted over your existing tooth to restore its appearance and function. Dr. Steven Chang, cosmetic dentist, offers crowns to correct structural issues, improve the appearance of misshapen teeth, or complete a dental implant.

How Are Crowns Placed by Our Same Day Dentist?

Dr. Chang will take x-rays and examine your tooth during your first visit. The remaining tooth structure must be reshaped to accommodate the crown without changing your bite. Our same day dentist will then take an impression of your tooth from which to custom design your crown. A temporary crown is worn for approximately three weeks, the length of time it takes to manufacture your permanent crown. On your final visit, your new crown will be bonded into place with dental cement.

What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a tooth restoration procedure that spans the space left by missing teeth. A bridge is comprised of crowns, the number of which depends upon the number of teeth to be replaced. A three unit bridge, for example, would replace one missing tooth, and consists of three crowns. The center crown spans the space left by the missing teeth while the adjacent crowns are cemented, by our same day dentist, to your own natural teeth to hold the prosthetic in place. A bridge is an excellent permanent solution for tooth loss. The entire process takes roughly three weeks, from your initial visit for our cosmetic dentists to prepare the teeth to the final placement. A temporary dental bridge will be worn in the interim.
